For patients suffering from mood disorders—especially severe depression or bipolar disorder—ketamine infusions can be a life-changing treatment. Effective in up to 70% of patients, ketamine rapidly alleviates the symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD and other potentially debilitating psychiatric conditions. The patients who respond to ketamine treatments are often able to reclaim their lives—return to work, enjoy the hobbies they had previously lost interest in, travel with their families, and otherwise live a rich and fulfilling life.
Because the effects of ketamine infusions can be so positively powerful, there is value in understanding any factors that would make a patient more or less responsive to the therapy. In August 2017, Biological Psychiatry published a study indicating that ketamine was typically effective in patients who tend to be more active in the mornings and more lethargic in the evenings, thus linking ketamine infusions with the clock-gene mechanisms that control circadian rhythms. Read our post about this study here.
However, a new study was recently published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, presenting data that indicates heightened efficacy of ketamine in a set of patients with very specific metabolic-inflammatory alterations and cognitive features: a higher BMI, a history of alcoholism, impaired cognition, and sleep disfunction, to name a few.
This is not to say, however, that if a person doesn’t have a high BMI or impaired cognition, that he or she will not respond positively to ketamine infusions. Ketamine works wonders for all kinds of patients, including those who have failed to respond to other pharmacological or psychiatric treatments.
We can’t tell you with certainty whether ketamine infusions could help you or a loved one with depression or any other psychiatric disorder. We can, however, tell you that our Littleton and Westminster, CO ketamine clinics see ketamine change—and save—the lives of patients every day. If you are suffering or feeling hopelessly bound by the grasps of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or PTSD, ketamine could be the treatment you’ve been looking for.
